Airlines ticket prices

Post by kma27 »

What's going on??? I haven't seen these high ticket prices since back in the early 2000's or so when we had to fork out $865.00 per ticket! I had purchased tickets back in May for $515.00 each (ended up canceling that particular trip) and now those very same tickets are between $800-$900 each. I am sick. I have a chance to plan a new trip and I can't believe the prices I am seeing. Anybody got any tips?

No good tips really, but when I booked our February '12 trip there was a very big difference in prices for the weeks that schools are on break.

airfare

I am having the same problem..Taking my son on a trip for spring break this year and the air fare is sky high!!! The only tips I have come across are check prices on Tuesdays after 3pm eastern...This is when most companies post sales or discounts and try to fly on Tues/Wed or sat. either early am or later pm for cheapest flights... Have been searching like crazy and not finding a price I can live with yet...Good luck!!

Our vacations are set by work and school schedules and when we were planning back in July, the travel agent (first time I had used on in years) advised me to buy then, that all their industry data indicated there were no sales or bargains on the horizon. She was right, tickets for our flights (and flights on the same day) have gone up since then. Sorry, I am no help....

This is what I do, know the week you are travelling, know what your pain threshold is for ticket price. Put in a watch on the ticket price with Travelocity Fare Watcher, Airfare Watchdog, etc. Then wait and see. Tickets from SLC to STT were running 900-1000, but got a notice that it had changed price via email. Jumped on it and ended up paying $500 a seat. Delta SLC-ATL, ATL - STT. Have also used the same strategy for tickets to Hawaii, and picked up some for $420. A friend also did the same thing and was able to get tickets to Maui for $450.

But you have to jump on them when you get the notice. They do not stick around.
usually within a hour or two they are gone. But that is planning months out. If you are within 2 months of when you are travelling it's not going to get lower.

I usually check about everyday and I was shocked to see how much they had gone up since the day before.. Even Spirit was over 600 for 1 ticket for June...I checked a cpl other airlines and they were even worse...but I checked again this morning and Spirits prices were back down...not sure about others...but might wanna take a look...I do know that I always advise buying tickets to others on Wednesday morning..that's supposedly when they drop...:)

I am seeing some really good fares from Florida thru San Juan to St Thomas for early next year on Jet Blue. This airline is expanding rapidly in the Caribbean; we flew to San Juan last February and were quite pleased with the experience.

Yeah, I was just about to mention jet blue. If you can get to San Juan reasonably cheaply they offer $78 RT to STT from SJU.

We feel your pain...airfare for us from Detroit to STT for spring break is double what it was last year. We haven't decided what to do yet, but we went to Hawaii last summer and loved it, and fares are comparable and even cheaper for us to Hawaii at spring break. I don't get it, but then again who could figure out airlines? :)

We will have to decide what to do soon, but we are hoping that regardless of spring fares, we might get lucky with good fares to STT for a St. John trip next summer.
