Snorkel trip to Molokini and a trip to Hana and the 7 pools
Re: Who's been to Maui?
Haleakala volcano.
Yes - getting up at an un-Godly hour, driving the twisties up the mountain, and dressing for the 25-30 degree temperature difference is WORTH IT if you get a good sunrise. Awe inspiring.
Walkabout in Lahaina for sunset and dinner.
Shopping and fish tacos at Whalers Village, then do the walkway that follows Kaanapali Beach for beach views, people watching, surf lessons, sunset, resort gawking, and bars serving Kona beers on tap.

I am also a big fan of Frommer's "Day by Day" pocket size books.
The Maui version has lotsa maps, lotsa good "best of" suggestions - - of course, best when cross referenced with other sources.

Maui Revealed is a great guide. One thing that wasn't mentioned was the Nakalele Blowhole. It's pretty awesome to experience the power of the ocean. The road to Hana is an all day experience. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the waterfalls. Iao Valley is pretty awesome, too. Honolua Bay is picturesque...
It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere!
Re: Who's been to Maui?
How does Maui compare as far as expense compared to STJ... meals etc.. Thanks !!

Re: Who's been to Maui?
We found more opportunities to offset the higher airfare to HI in Kauai than in Maui, making a trip to Kauai more comparable to STJ than to Maui. The Maui resort and resort adjacent areas have prices for drinks and restaurants meals that can easily equal or surpass those on St. John or the prices in a nicer big city restaurant.
Kauai can also be pricey but seemed to have more readily accessible options in terms of finding some very good eats away from the resort areas, including some great food trucks.
The overall quality (and variety) of locally caught fish on both islands tends to be that you can get some great fish even at lower price points.
In season, 80% of the places in the main resort areas of Maui are mostly pretty expensive i.e. around in-season Gallows Point prices. There are some off the beaten path a that can be a bit less expensive.
Again, we found more options in Kauai in terms of condo type rentals with killer views for less than resort prices. Vehicle rental also less in Kauai then Maui, and Maui vehicle rental is less than STJ.
Hope this helps.

Re: Who's been to Maui?
The Hyatt is where we stayed for 4 nights, using 2 free nights for signing up for their credit card, then got upgraded to oceanfront by the nice folks at the front desk.
This will be your view at Maui Hyatt if you have oceanfront.
We were there last 4th of July and could see the fireworks in town from our balcony.
Say hello to these guys who live in the open air lobby.
At first you say "Penguins in the lobby? That's ridiculous" then you find yourself making sure you walk by them on your way to/from beach/pool LOL.
Also make use of that resort fee by doing a yoga class etc. at the spa.

Re: Who's been to Maui?
I think someone mentioned it already, but I'll cast another vote for the road to Hana.
Re: Who's been to Maui?
Ditto the advice to get the book Maui Revealed. We like to go off the beaten path and there are so many great suggestions in that book.Ron in South Texas wrote:Maui Revealed is a great guide. You will have a great trip!!!
It is expensive but we decided to spend most of our money of activities and try to save on food by having breakfast in the room and not eating again until dinner. It worked for us.
Where are you staying??
