It was a NASA project in conjunction with a number of other companies/agencies to study man's ability to live and work in an isolated environment. They built underwater living modules. This was in preparation for Skylab. I understand you can still see some minor remnants of the original underwater dwellings while diving at Tektite.

promoguy: No, I wasn't involved. I was only 10 when it began. I just look old. :) And, yes, those are some funky hair styles for sure.

captkirk: Here's a link for some info. I'm thinking about a snorkel there, and hubby found the pictures when he did a search.

These are so fascinating!

Is it just me, or does the guy that the owner of the photos said was the project manager for Tektite look just like "Dwight" from the TV show "The Office"?

All of the Tektite living pod is gone now--the only things you can see if you dive/snorkel are the platforms they put in to support the structure. They are just square plates with huge screws sticking out. It's not very interesting. However, the area is exciting to snorkel for observation of the colorful sponges and open-air cave-like areas.

The Charlotte Amalie waterfront photo is printed in reverse - but what a treasure trove of photos - especially the waitresses at the Carousal from 1970.
