STJ vs STT questions

Post by Connie »

I think we all know that this forum is more of a STJ forum then anything else with some posts about STT thrown in, but I was wondering a couple things.

1. Of all the people who have been to STJ, how many of you have only gotten off the plane, driven through Charlotte Amalie to get on the ferry and get over to STJ.

2. How many of you have taken any time to explore STT except for shopping?

3. How many of you have been to STT to discover some of the beaches and snorkeling?

4. How many of you have gone over to STT just to spend some time eating and drinking.

I think that's about it. Just curious because we're so happy with STT and it seems like it gets a bad rap sometimes. Personally I don't like Charlotte Amalie, although this year we will do some history there and end up at Paradise Point. Only place I'll consider shopping is Havensite, but I try to stay away from that too.

Last week, We stayed our first night at Crystal Palace and had dinner with forum friends. Crystal Palace was delightful and will be a repeat. I could easily see spending more time there. I'll say more in our trip report.

Not me, we've stayed on St. Thomas twice, at Secret Harbour.

2. How many of you have taken any time to explore STT except for shopping?

There is a lot of the island we have not seen, but that is because we did not rent a car. We did do the (gasp, gasp, pant) 99 steps and checked out some of the historical sites in CA, but I'll admit that we spent most of our time hanging out at the resort.

3. How many of you have been to STT to discover some of the beaches and snorkeling?

Snorkeling is great at Secret Harbour! :D

4. How many of you have gone over to STT just to spend some time eating and drinking.

We sometimes take the ferry over from St. John for dinner. John likes Off the Hook a lot. (And Duffy's ha ha!) I think this trip we are going to try Wikked.

Connie,

My wife and I made our first trip to USVI in 1991 and we stayed at Point Pleasant Resort on STT. We thought STT was the greatest place in the world and always planned to go back. On that trip we only took a day trip to STJ, rented a jeep and toured around on our own.

It took some friends of ours to invite us to go with them to STJ (they were on their first trip) in 2005 before we ever got around to going back. Honestly, prior to going on that trip, I was a little disappointed that we weren't going to be staying on STT. After that week in 2005, we are totally hooked! We took another trip in 2006 and dream of being there all the time.

There is just something special about St. John. Whether it be the beaches, the pace, the people, or all the above, I am not sure. All I know is that it captivates those of us that tend to populate this forum unlike any other place.

We've stayed at the Green Iguana and Hotel 1829 for a night before heading over to STJ. Really liked the Green Iguana and did the 99 steps down AND back last time. I'm wicked out of shape and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be  .

I've not, however, had the chance to explore the island beyond Charlotte Amalie.

I actually really like the shopping streets and alleys in CA! Especially in the early AM before the hoards funnel in- really quite charming!
We loved the Greenhouse last time we went- great happy hour specials, bingo, music and really fun food.

Glady's Cafe was also a hoot with the wonderful singing and awesome hot sauces! I asked what the difference was between the three hotsauces and was told "one is red, one is yellow and the other one is really hot!"

But I don't think I could stay on STT for an entire week. We really want quiet, solitude and a natural and safe environment in our vacation choices. We don't bar hop and we don't appreciate a gourmet fine dining experience that we have to dress up for. I think we would get sensory overload on STT if we stayed too long.

STJ is more intimate. It almost feels like it is your own personal island when you are there- like you can really make a connection to the island. I think it's the size of the island as well as the pristine nature of it.

The first year in the Caribbean was spent on St Maarten at a condo/townhouse on Simpson Bay. The next two years we rented a St Martin villa in Terres Basses. A few years later Mrs Random found a place in STT above Hull Bay. The young woman who fetched us from the airport to the villa let me borrow her surfboard for the week. I spent several days playing in the waves at Carret Bay. We drove all over the island, going to beach after beach - from obscure dirt road palm tree beaches to Magens to the groomed beauty of Sapphire. We ate in Frenchtown and at Blackbeards, and shopped the back streets of CA...then we went to STJ and never looked back.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

I hope they never build a cruise ship dock at St. John. That's one big difference between the two islands. They each have their charms, but I like that they are different in their own ways.

After living on STJ, I can say that I spent a lot of time on STT and it is just not my style. It is too big for me (I am from a small town)and has too many stateside conveniences that I do not look for on vacation.

2. How many of you have taken any time to explore STT except for shopping?
See above, I have spent a considerable amount of time on STT and it is just not for me. I have friends that live on STT, I would visit beaches and attend events.

3. How many of you have been to STT to discover some of the beaches and snorkeling? See above

4. How many of you have gone over to STT just to spend some time eating and drinking.
We used to head over occasionally to try a new restaurant or visit an old favoite. Before the China Shack, we would head over to Red Hook for our monthly chinese food craving.

STT is a very popular destination and there are many people that return every year. I don't think it has anything to do with it being a bad place to visit, it is just not the type of vacation that many people are looking for. I work with a woman that goes to Jamaica 3 times a year. I went once and I will never return. She loves it and I hate it. Just a matter of personal preference.[/b]

My introduction to the USVI was a trip to St. Thomas in 1976; returned the next few years as my aunt had a time share. After a gap in a lot of years, we returned in 1991 and split the week between STT and STJ (this was the first trip to STJ). I'll be spending a couple of nights on STT following a week in STJ in November.

2. How many of you have taken any time to explore STT except for shopping?
Spent time visiting marinas and charter companies "researching" a potential bareboat trip "someday".

3. How many of you have been to STT to discover some of the beaches and snorkeling?

Magens Bay is probably my favorite beach. Have spent time on Morningstar (which was awesome before the resort was built), Sapphire and Coki.

4. How many of you have gone over to STT just to spend some time eating and drinking.

Not just to eat and drink, but we did stay for dinner at the Mafolie when there to shop.

We had been to Sapphire Beach and Maegan's Bay by taking a taxi from the port on two previous cruises. In May last year we spent the night at Bluebeard's upon arrival and had a great time that evening and having breakfast the next morning at M. Malone's. This trip Jason and I are heading down early and staying at Secret Harbour for three days before the rest of the crew arrives and we head over to StJ. I'm looking forward to relaxing at the resort and also seeing a little more of St. Thomas.
I agree that I like St. John more for the small town feel.

I know people who travel to STT all of the time and have no desire for StJ because they like the bigger city feel. It's all in what you want!

We spent about three hours in CA during our first trip. We had a bad experience within the first hour that involved the police and needing to be escorted by by security to the ferry. It was certainly not the island's fault, we simply had the misfortune to run into the wrong person at the wrong time. It did not leave us with a good feeling. The next two trips we did enjoyed hanging out at Drake's passage for pre-ferry drinks.

2. How many of you have taken any time to explore STT except for shopping?

Not yet but Linne's trip reports have motivated us to plan a history trip when we can take more time off of work.

3. How many of you have been to STT to discover some of the beaches and snorkeling?

Not yet but I would like to do an overnight or two at Secret Harbor.

4. How many of you have gone over to STT just to spend some time eating and drinking.

Drinking pre-ferry.

Nothing bad to say about STT, really. I mean, you're going to have to expect all those things that come with a bigger population: more crime, more trash, more of everything. But there are great spots to explore and tons of cool people.
