Some photos of St. John circa 1967

Post by Bill W »

Just got a new 35mm film scanner in this morning and spent some time scanning some old slides my father took when we stayed on St. John in July of 1967. I'm not having too much luck figuring out where some of them were taken; perhaps some of our island veterans can help. Enjoy!

(I'm still figuring out the scanner, so forgive the quality flaws and yes, I know I need one of those canned air thingies to get the dust and cat fur off.)

Is this the Cruz Bay ferry dock?

Cruz Bay, I guess looking toward Gallows Point.

Another shot from the parade, "Welcome Miss ????". Can't make out the wording on the hand-drawn sign.

Need an attorney in Cruz Bay? I guess John W. Newman was the guy to go to in 1967.

Could this be looking up the street toward where the Fish Trap and Conrad Sutton's are today? That wall looks kind of familiar, everything else, not so much. (edit - Hugo posted a response below indicating that this is almost certainly Tortola. We did a day trip there on this vacation, so I'm assuming he's right about that.)

Oh thanks, Bill. These are really precious. Please post more if you have any.

The photo of the ferry dock is pretty much how it still was in the mid-80s when we made our first trip. The "terminal" still hadn't been built then.

Great stuff! Mooie's as a bank. I wonder if her family still lived upstairs?

Yeah, I think that's him in the knee socks and hat.

There are a few more on our flickr page, just click through any of the photos to get there. And I've got a few hundred slides here from two trips in the mid sixties; I will at some point go through and scan a bunch of them. I want to get a little more practice in, though, so I don't end up having to re-do them when I finally figure out how to use the color and exposure corrections and all that.

So - Mooie's is where the bank was? And, sorry, I don't think I have a picture of the beer stand.

One thing I may do when we go down in March is bring some of these prints with me and try to get shots of what the scenes look like today. Figuring out where they were taken is the problem. Maybe I'll just wander around Cruz Bay saying, "Hi, you look old, do you have any idea where this picture was taken?"
