1. The view from our time share's deck looking west toward St. Thomas. It never gets old.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/billvt/4460601091/" title="Sunset over St Thomas by nayr48, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4046/4460 ... 928a4f.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Sunset over St Thomas"></a>

2. Hiking to a beach were we might be the only ones or very few there.

3. Snorkeling. Anywhere.

4. Coconut rum, lime juice and seltzer. It doesn't taste the same anywhere else.

comfort....we were discussing this yesterday! I sometimes feel we are limiting ourselves by going to the same place every year, but when you need a getaway as much as we do, it's comforting to go back to where you know you can relax immediately (like home!) and not have to have the anxious feelings of what do we do, how do we get there, etc, etc. When we step off that plane it's a feeling like no other. Coral Bay here we come! :D

It's the feeling for me- as we pull into cruz bay I become so relaxed and worry free. It's a feeling I haven't been able to find anywhere else in my travels.

Haven't figured out the right name for it, but STJ is what I like to call the anti-all-inclusive or anti-cruise vacation. I don't begrudge those who crave lethargy on vacation and just want to turn their brains off and let someone else steer while they're on vacation with preset menus and poolside service and an itinerary reminiscent of a playbill.

But I'd rather be a "traveler-adventure" than a passive vacationer.

I like getting up each day with no agenda and the knowledge that the best stuff is free and lies just beyond the horizon - and getting there means I'm going to have to put a little effort in via hiking, swimming, or driving a road that wouldn't pass for a road stateside, etc. And afterward, I like rewarding myself for burning those calories with a huge cheeseburger, garlic fried chicken or conch fritters served by a real person who only smiles when they're actually happy in a "whole in the wall" place considered too uncouth for the Bon Apetit crowd.

Getting up every morning not knowing what will unfold that day is my favorite thing about STJ.
It’s not about yesterday or tomorrow...It’s about today, for come what may – Sun, rain, or hurricane – we've only time for a smile, and none for sorrow

I am not a church going person. St John is my spiritual place. Each time I visit, I stand at Annaberg and look over the water at the amazing colors and sheer beauty of the island. I have visions of what "once was" - remembering the history of the slaves who once lived horrible lives there and feeling so completely fortunate to experience that incredible feeling of peace in a way that they were never fortunate enough to experience. It sends tears down my cheeks every time I do it. St. John is peace for me in my otherwise hectic life.

1. The night songs of the tree frogs while sitting on the deck of a gorgeous villa sipping coconut rum on ice and watching cruise ships disappear on the horizon.

2. Waking up in the middle of a moonlit night and going to the open deck off the bedroom and seeing/hearing the waves, feeling the breeze off the water and knowing that you're in your favorite place.

3. Sitting on the beach eating lunch while toasting in the sun and soaking up the sights ABOVE the water after being dazzled by the sights UNDER the water.

1. The sense of "being home" when we get off the car barge.
2. Swimming with eagle rays
3. Bananaquits
4. Giving back to the island
5. Finding any new underwater creature we never experienced before!

Walking up our stairs to our villa for the first time (Casa Bueno) and knowing that we picked the perfect place for our vacation. Also, snorkeling with the family and seeing turtles for the first time and just snorkeling the different beaches. I could go on and on but until we return one day that is it for now.
