This is not a good picture but is it a shark?

Post by cindygad »

We snorkeled Waterlemon today and as I was going to the grassy area I saw this out of the corner of my eye. It was swimming fast. I know I should not be scared but can you tell if it was a shark or not?

Yes it does, and it doesn't seem to resemble a Nurse shark either...

That is what I thought but I did not know what type either. Too bad I didn't get a better picture but I was scared and it was moving too fast,

Interesting! Sure looks like a shark to me. Is it a reef shark?

Looks awfully sharky to me. Black tip maybe? Cool yet scary at the same time.

No black tip but the likely guess would be caribbean reef shark.

It is hard to tell. The more I look at it the more I think it looks like a dolphin, but what do I know?

I'm going with your vote, Xislandgirl! Dolphin it is. ;-) I'm sure that's what I'll be telling myself next week at Waterlemon. :)

Haha on the dolphin votes

Looks like a Caribbean reef shark to me. I saw two of them off Turtle Bay once. Definitely gave me a start!

Lemon Shark

Post by hockeyboy »

My vote is Lemon Shark. Dolphin no. A dolphin would have swam towards you and jumped over you and then lifted his head out of the water and said,
"ak-ak-ak-ak-squeeee"

The shark was probably more scared than you.

The place I'm staying in three weeks has a reef in front with dependable shark sightings. I'm wondering if I'll be scared when I see one. My guess is:

3 ft Lemon Shark - no
7 ft Nurse Shark - no
8 ft Bull shark - yes and hell yes.

I was trying to ease people's fears. I can barely see it so I have no idea what the heck it is!
