Re: Stupid Obsession

Thanks for this post. Way back in the 80’s my parents' Windjammer cruise stopped at Charlotte Amalie and they spent a day on STJ, sending us a postcard photo from Cinnamon Bay Campground. It showed a tent in beach sand with a glimpse of turquoise water. I hung onto that postcard for years. When we r...

Re: Which trails/hikes to do?

If you want to include your husband, the ruins directly across from Cinnamon Bay campground have a very walkable boardwalk through them. You can park for free in the lot in the campground if you get there early and walk across the street to the boardwalk. Bring your bathing suits and towels as it's ...

Re: "You know there is nothing to do on St. John"

We spend two weeks every March camping at Cinnamon Bay. "As busy as you want to be" describes it perfectly. March 2014 will be our sixth trip and we haven't gotten bored even for a minute. Your friend is much less tactful than you.

Re: The walk of woe

Our walk of woe at Cinnamon Bay campground is bet described in a photo I can't figure out how to post. It shows my husband sadly pushing the metal cart full of our luggage back up to the taxi stand, leaving our site, the beach, the sugar birds and good friends behind as we anticipate the travails of...

Re: Water Trucks

We have never rented a vehicle in 5 trips for this very reason. We do a lot of walking and hitching into town and take taxis back. You meet so many great people hitching.

Re: What did you wish someone told you for your first trip

That when arriving at Cinnamon Bay campground, take the route to your site as it has been marked on the map you're given. Don't try to push a cart full of coolers and suitcases down one of the side trails! Especially after a long travel day!

Re: Fill in the Blanks...

We are obsessed with STJ 'cause it's become our new vacation spot. After retiring and relocating from upstate NY to our previous vacation spot on Cape Cod we realized that New England sea coast stayed gray and cheerless thru March, April, and often May. So 2 wks camping at Cinnamon Bay lets us retur...

Re: St. John withdrawal

You just helped me with my STJ withdrawal by posting those photos. We were campiNg on site 28 from 3/6-3/20. We had hung up a St. Pat's flag on our clothesline. It was our fifth time and we're reserved for next year. Here's what I did to treat my STJ withdrawal: updated my packing list, emailed some...

Re: BBQ places and Virgin Cocktails?

Highly, highly recommend Candies. If you walk toward the Marketplace, passing the school on your right, you will see a turquoise building with pink trim on your left just before you reach the Marketplace. That's Candies. Very reasonable. If you like spicy, ask for the jerk sauce.

Re: Never been to St. John and need advice

I'm surprised no one mentioned the cottages at Cinnamon Bay. They certainly are in a different category than the villas but you can check out the Cinnamon Bay Campground website for photos, info.
