We found more opportunities to offset the higher airfare to HI in Kauai than in Maui, making a trip to Kauai more comparable to STJ than to Maui. I am also a big fan of Frommer's "Day by Day" pocket size books.
The Maui version has lotsa maps, lotsa good "best of" suggestions - - of course, best when cross referenced with other sources.
