Report from my secret but highly reliable sources: As of yesterday, Hawksnest Point Trail is as wide and clear as it's ever been in history. The last clearing took place an estimated 3 weeks ago, based on regrowth of grass.

Yes, although Caneel has continued to clear the trail consistently in the 30 years or so since it went to the Park. It would be interesting to see if the trail is blocked to Caneel guests....maybe I need to do a little stealth investigation.('') There were issues with Caneel clearing new larg...

Laurance Rockefeller specifically deeded the Hawksnest Point property to the Park in the early 1980s with the understanding that the public could access the trail in perpetuity. Times have changed greatly. The enormous increase in rental houses has changed St John tourism--not just the numbers of pe...

Yes, but since you do NOT need a passport to travel between the VI and the US mainland, any official photo ID would be valid.

You wouldn't have noticed it unless you were hanging around the lumberyard late at night. I think it was there until the owner was arrested in the big drug bust earlier this year. There was huge talk about it on the forum when it opened, but, oddly, nobody ever mentioned it in a trip report

Possibly you can see a little corner of the Creek and the customs dock from the outdoor table. Mostly you'd see traffic and Penn's yard.

Sea level: 63 degrees, mountain top 57. These were both rare events. Normal winter lows 67-70 at sea level, 64-68 on Bordeaux. Winters-- and summers -have averaged considerably higher than the former normal in the past 10 years. Wind chill is also a factor. As was mentioned, you soon get very accust...

If you plan to work at the Clinic, I believe they provide some housing for RNs--maybe limited and all taken, but worth investigating.

Seaborne is fun and safe. I haven't heard of any problems in the 15 years or so they've operated here, and I've made the STT/STX trip innumerable times. After Antilles Airboats perished in Hurricane Hugo (it was a merciful death, the planes had started to fall out of the sky all the time) another co...

To clarify, St. Thomas Carnival is an annual event, generally in the last week of April, although it can move as far as early May- if Easter is late (as it was this year). I just did a search and came up with April 21th-28th for 2012.

We have had power most of the day, keeping our fingers crossed about tonight.

Worst non-hurricane related WAPA situation I can remember since the 70s.
