We did this a couple of years ago. Rented a car at Buffalo airport, no problems with border or customs at all. We stayed at Hilton w/ view of the falls. Big hotel, big $$, lots of people, very crowded, the falls are absolutely stunning! Everyone should visit, kinda on the scale with the Grand Canyon...

I have been flying USAir a lot recently. The gate agents will offer upgrades when available at the very last moment. Relatively short domestic flight upgrades are offered for $150.
Not sure what an upgrade on the trip to STT would cost.
