Hotel Caravelle 03/26/02

ExcellentI hesitated before giving this property four stars, because I did not want people to expect a high end resort. But the Caravelle is such an exceptionally welcoming place that to do otherwise would be a disservice. This is a small hotel on the waterfront in downtown Christiansted that offers reasonable prices, comfortable accomodations, superb service and a perfect location. No, there is not a beach, but there is a lovely pool and the beach is literally a five minute walk and two minute ferry ride away.
One huge advantage for this hotel is its close proximity to so many restaurants, shops and activities. It is in the heart of the historic district, with access to many museums, but also to numerous watersports - fishing, diving and snorkeling. There are many art galleries and the dining choices range from Pizza Hut (only chain downtown - thank heavens) to local food to restaurants that have been favorably reviewed in Gourmet magazine and featured on TV. It's not necessary to rent a car with so many things nearby, but the best car rental on island is a half block away and the hotel is one of the few with a parking lot (and a secure one at that!).
But the real reason I keep going back (19 times so far) is the warm, friendly, helpful staff. On our recently completed trip a hotel guest broke a finger. Not only did the manager come in on her day off, she took him to the emergency room and stayed with him until his release (all day) and insisted on personally taking him to see an orthopedist the following day. This is not the first time I've seen her offer such service - it's a trademark with this hotel.
